NORMAN, Okla. -- No. 9 Oklahoma's season ended on Sunday night in the championship round of the NCAA Norman Regional at L. Dale Mitchell Park. No. 21 Arkansas topped the Sooners, 11-0, to advance to next weekend's Super Regional play.
The Sooners have played in the championship game of an NCAA Regional in four out of the last five years. OU, the nation's No. 7 seed, finishes the 2009 season at 43-20 after a 2-2 showing in the postseason. The Sooners are 11-9 under head coach Sunny Golloway in the NCAA Tournament. The 43 wins is the second most by a Sooner team (behind 2006 squad with 45) since OU's second National Championship in 1994.
After winning 7-2 earlier in the day to eliminate Washington State, Oklahoma was blanked by the Razorbacks' Drew Smyly. The left-hander tossed a one hitter over 8 1/3 innings with the lone base knock allowed in the ninth inning.
Trey Sperring broke up the opportunity and knocked Smyly out of the contest. Kaleb Herren followed with OU's other hit in the ball game off reliever Stephen Richards.
“There is a lot of disappointment right now,” said Golloway. “I feel for our players. We have some outstanding men at the University of Oklahoma and, in time, I told them they would reflect on a great year. I know there is a lot of pain tonight and we'll work through it. Tomorrow, we'll get up and start thinking about next year's club, the draft, who you are going to get back and you who you are going to be able to see on campus as your recruits and you move forward.”
Arkansas got off to a strong start with two runs in the first inning despite two strikeouts by OU starter Antwonie Hubbard. The right-hander struck out the side in the second inning but surrendered four more runs in the third frame. Hubbard (2-3) was tagged for four earned runs in 2 1/3 innings with seven strikeouts.
Jeremy Erben and Andrew Doyle followed Hubbard's start and each allowed one run off three hits in relief. Ryan Duke pitched the final three innings.
Andy Wilkins, the regional's Most Outstanding Player, delivered for the Razorbacks with a career-high five hits and five RBIs.
For the Sooners, Jamie Johnson, Garrett Richards and Aaron Baker were named to the all-tournament team. OU has had at least three players named to an all-regional team in each of the last four NCAA appearances.
Oklahoma will lose four seniors (C.J. Blue, Matt Harughty, Trey Sperring and J.T. Wise) and await the results of the 2009 Major League Draft on June 9.
