WYANDOTTE, Kan.-- The University of Oklahoma women's rowing team competed in the first Big 12 Championship, Saturday on Wyandotte County Lake. Texas won the first Big 12 title with 51 points, followed by Kansas State (48) and Kansas (45). OU won two-of-three races but did not factor into scoring for the title because the team did not yield the five-boat minimum.
"It was a great day of racing," head coach Leeanne Crain said. "All of our boats performed really well and I think we've got a tremendous future ahead of us, based on how well we competed in the Big 12 today."
The varsity four competed against Big 12 opponents for the first time this season. Oklahoma finished first with a time of seven minutes, 24.6 seconds defeating Kansas, Texas and Kansas State.
OU's first novice eight looked to redeem themselves from the loss to Kansas State at the Longhorn Invitational. The Sooners did just that by capturing first place with a time of 6:51.4 to defeat second place finisher Kansas State by six seconds.
The second novice eight placed second in its race posting a time of 7:21.3, finishing behind Texas (7:07.8).
"I am extremely proud of our young novice squad," coach Andy Derrick said. "Coming back to avenge an early season loss to Kansas State took a level of discipline that most novice crews don't attain this early in their rowing careers. Today was representative of the hard work the whole novice team has put in over the last couple of months."
Oklahoma competes in the NCAA South/Central Regionals in Oak Ridge, Tenn. May 16-17.
