SECAUCUS, N.J. -- Courtney is going back to Northern California. Ashley will take her game to SoCal.
Courtney Paris was taken seventh overall by the Sacramento Monarchs in the first round and Ashley Paris 22nd overall by the Los Angeles Sparks in the second round of the 2009 WNBA Draft Thursday at NBA Entertainment Studios.
Courtney Paris, a four-time All-America center from Oklahoma was the first of a slew of post players taken in the middle of the first round. Paris is the fifth Sooner in history to be drafted in WNBA Draft's first round. Ashley Paris will add to the marquee names of the WNBA at Los Angeles, joining Lisa Leslie, Candace Parker and Tina Thompson on the Sparks' roster.
The Paris twins are the eighth and ninth Sooners drafted into the WNBA.
With Sacramento, Courtney Paris will play professionally just 80 miles northeast of her high school stomping grounds of Piedmont, Calif.
"I'm extremely happy," Courtney Paris said. "I never even thought about the potential of getting back to California and having that opportunity to play in front of my friends and family again. It's a dream come true."
According to the team's official Twitter page, Monarchs' head coach Jenny Boucek called Paris "the steal of the draft."
As expected, Louisville's versatile forward Angel McCoughtry was the first pick, going to the Atlanta Dream, one of few teams that had many positions to fill.
Maryland teammates Marissa Coleman and Kristi Toliver were taken second and third, respectively. Coleman will stay near her alma mater to play with the Washington Mystics. Toliver was drafted by the Chicago Sky.
Connecticut's Renee Montgomery (Minnesota), Auburn's DeWanna Bonner (Phoenix) and Arizona State's Briann January (Indiana) were the fourth through sixth picks.
The Paris sisters were among 15 players invited to attend the draft at NBA Entertainment Studios.
The 13th WNBA season tips off June 6 and Sacramento and Los Angeles will meet June 22.
Coincidentally, Courtney will arrive in Ashley's draft city of Los Angeles for the Wooden Award and Wooden All-America banquet Friday evening. Training camp for WNBA teams opens May 17.
