SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The University of Oklahoma women's novice rowing team placed fifth in the Grand Final Sunday at the San Diego Crew Classic. Oklahoma beat Southern California (7:56.70), but finished behind UCLA (7:35.96), Washington State (7:28.87), Oregon State (7:18.62) and first-place finisher Washington who recorded a time of 7:16.97.
Oklahoma's first novice eight, led by coxswain Kelsey Witten, Laura Moon, Brooke Sheppard, Cara Bowers, Sarah Kelle, Heather McDonald, Jenava Burguiere, Lindsay Hemingway and Monique Gaines, completed the weekend beating the No. 2 seed and was the only non-Pac 10 team to compete in the Grand Final.
"It was a great weekend of racing,” head coach Leeanne Crain said. “I am really proud of the performance of our team in our inaugural season of racing. It was a great experience for our novice team to go up against some of the best teams out of the Pac-10. They did an outstanding job."
The Sooners next regatta is April 18 at the SIRA Championships in Oak Ridge, Tenn.
