NORMAN, Okla. – The University of Oklahoma women's rowing team returns to competition this weekend at the San Diego Crew Classic. The event is one of the most well-known eight oar racing competitions in the country. The Sooners enter the event seeded as one of the top teams in the competition. The only teams seeded higher are the University of Washington, Minnesota, Oregon State, USC, UCLA and Washington State.
“The San Diego Crew Classic is one of the oldest collegiate rowing races and has traditionally been the season opener for most of the programs around the country,” head coach Leeanne Crain said. “This regatta attracts some of the very best teams in the nation. It should be a great experience for our novice team. The varsity four will also see some good competition on Friday against San Diego State and USD, as both are solid West coast programs.”
The first novice eight races Saturday morning at 10:45 a.m. The squad must finish first or second in their heat in order to advance to Sunday's Grand Final. Teams which finish third or fourth move on to the petite (consolation) final. Racing for the first novice eight are Laura Moon, Brooke Sheppard, Cara Bowers, Sarah Kelle, Heather McDonald, Jenava Burguiere, Lindsay Hemingway, Monique Gaines and Kelsey Witten at the cox.
The second novice eight faces UC Santa Barbara, Minnesota, UC San Diego, San Diego State, Long Beach State, and UC Davis Saturday afternoon. Racing for the second novice eight are Izzy Stewart, Brandi Brown, Katherine Rabe, Brooke Homer, Laurel Holasek, Madelyn Randolph, Janelle Roche, Caroline Brannin and Haley Brown as the cox.
The varsity four races Friday against the University of San Diego and San Diego State. Racing for the varsity four are Teddi Dwyer, Chelsea Moore, Elena Engles, Meagan Harrell and Lauren Price as the cox.
