AUSTIN, Texas -- The No. 9 Sooners were unable to avoid a doubleheader sweep on Saturday, dropping the second game, 6-2, to the No. 10 Longhorns at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.
Oklahoma (29-10 overall, 8-6 Big 12) lost the series opener earlier in the day, 7-3, to Texas (28-8, 11-6).
“I think it's something we can definitely learn from,” said OU Head Coach Sunny Golloway about the Sooners' first series defeat of the season. “We have to come back and fight really hard on the last day and come out with a victory. We have a good club, one bad day doesn't change anything.”
For the second time on Saturday, Texas took the early lead and as a result, chased OU starter Stephen Porlier after 1 2/3 innings. Since returning from injury, Porlier had pitched effectively in his three previous outings, including last weekend's start against Texas Tech. But Saturday was not the hurler's day as he gave up three runs off seven hits.
Porlier fell to 1-1 on the season while Texas reliever Austin Dicharry jumped to 5-1 with 2 2/3 innings of work.
Texas extended its lead to 4-0 in the bottom of the third with Cameron Rupp's RBI single off Jeremy Erben.
In the top of the fifth, Oklahoma got on the board with Jamie Johnson's RBI single. The base knock plated Casey Johnson, who doubled to lead off the frame.
Rupp struck again in the bottom of the fifth and hit a two-run shot to give the Longhorns a 6-1 lead. Erben, like Porlier, had not allowed a run in his three outings prior to Saturday. The junior surrendered three runs off five hits in five innings of relief.
The Sooners countered in the top of the sixth as Aaron Baker scored on J.T. Wise's 37th RBI of the season, a single up the middle.
Unfortunately, that was all OU's offense could muster as Jamie Johnson led the way with two hits.
OU and Texas will conclude the series on Sunday at 1 p.m. in Austin. The game will be broadcast live on KOKC 1520 AM with Chuck Kelly calling the play-by-play.
