OAK RIDGE, Tenn. - The University of Oklahoma rowing varsity eight, novice four and novice eight teams competed in Oak Ridge, Tenn., at the SIRA Championships Saturday.
Oklahoma's varsity eight competed for the first time this season, finishing fifth in their heat with a time of six minutes, 58.4 seconds. Kansas State finished first with a time of 6:42.9, Purdue (6:46.47), Kansas (6:52.47), Alabama (6:56.73) and Jacksonville (7:09.7). The Sooners compete in the consolation final Sunday at 11:30 a.m. CT. against Alabama, SMU, Tulsa, West Virginia and Jacksonville.
"This was the first time we've raced a varsity eight this season," Head coach Leeanne Crain said. "Only four athletes in the lineup had rowing experience prior to last semester. Considering that, I think we did a great job of competing today."
The novice four hit the water for the first time this season in an impressive fashion, winning their heat and semifinal races. The victories put them in the Grand Final Sunday at 7:29 a.m. CT.
The novice eight finished fifth and race in the Petite Final Sunday.
