Sooners Down Shockers, 6-1

NORMAN, Okla. -- The 38th-ranked University of Oklahoma men's tennis team (12-8, 1-4 Big 12) downed Wichita State, 6-1, Wednesday at the Headington Family Tennis Center.

“I think we are glad to get out of this with a win,” OU head coach Paul Lockwood said. “Wichita State is better than their record shows, but I thought our guys did a good job moving their feet and staying mentally tough.”

The Sooners began the match sweeping the doubles competition. At the No. 1 position, senior Sergey Avdeyev teamed with sophomore Ionut Beleleu to defeat WSU's Michal Zawadzki and Adrian Chermaci, 8-4. Avdeyev and Beleleu are on a tare as of late and are currently ranked No. 42 in the country.

Junior Blake Boswell and sophomore Chase Miller secured the doubles point after beating the Shocker's Jonathon Obrist and David Cavalcanti, 8-4.

At the No. 2 position, junior Andrei Daescu paired with David Pultr, ranked No. 65 nationally, to take down WSU's Scott McCormick and Matt Teivans, 8-7(5).

In singles action, OU's Boswell was the first to secure a victory. He defeated WSU's McCormick, 6-2, 6-0, at the No. 5 position. Beleleu duplicated Boswell's score as he beat the Shocker's Cavalcanti, 6-2, 6-0, at the No. 3 spot.

Pultr secured the win for OU, 4-0, with his win at the No. 4 position. He defeated WSU's Teivans, 6-2, 6-1.

Avdeyev, Big 12 Player of the Week, continued his superb play and moved to the No. 1 position. He defeated WSU's Chermaci, 6-4, 6-2.

Next up for the Sooners is a trip to Lubbock, on Saturday, to take on No. 34 Texas Tech. The dual is OU's final Big 12 regular season match before the Big 12 Championships, April 24-26. The match is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
