OU Duo Advances to Big 12 Finals

LINCOLN, Neb. - Oklahoma one seeds Joey Fio (125 pounds) and Kyle Terry (149) raced out of the gates in front of 2,644 fans at the Big 12 Championships in Lincoln, Neb., Saturday, recording pins in their opening semifinal matches to advance to the championship finals.

The semifinals held inside the NU Coliseum began with OU's No. 7th-ranked Fio needing only the first period to record a fall over Nebraska's five seed, Andy Pokorny (1:25). The top seeded sophomore advances to the championship match tonight at 7 p.m., to bid for a Big 12 crown.

Also earning a spot in the finals tonight was No. 6th-ranked Terry, as the Midwest City, Okla., native scored a pin against in-state rival Luke Silver (five seed) of Oklahoma State (3:42). Terry extended his winning streak to 25 matches and now owns a 27-1 overall record.

Oklahoma stands in fourth place overall heading into this afternoon and evening sessions with 20 team points. Iowa State leads with 56 total.

After winning in the pigtail round this morning, OU's Seth Vernon at 141 pounds dropped his semifinal match to No. 1 seed Marcus Hoehn of Missouri, 5-1. Vernon falls to the consolation side of the bracket.

Jeff James also dropped his semifinal bout at 174 pounds after winning his first match this morning, falling to the top seeded Raymond Jordan of Missouri, 9-5.

Other Sooners falling into the consolation bracket were Brian Shelton (133 pounds) and Pat Flynn (184 pounds). Consolations begin at 4 p.m., with the finals commencing at 7 p.m.
