Pat Flynn Highlights Consolation Round

LINCOLN, Neb. - OU's Pat Flynn highlighted the consolation matches for the Sooners at the Big 12 Wrestling Championships in Lincoln, Neb., Saturday evening, as the redshirt sophomore bounced back from an opening loss this morning to post back-to-back pins to garner third place at 184 pounds.

The falls came against Dorian Henderson (four seed) of Missouri at 2:41 and Chris McNeil (five seed) of Oklahoma State at 1:47. Flynn, the third seed at the championships, now owns 10 falls this season, tied for the team's best with 197-pound Eric Lapotsky.

With the successful day, the Quakertown, Pa., native earns a spot at the 2009 NCAA Championships in two weeks.

In the 174-pound consolation final, Sooner Jeff James lost a heartbreaker to OSU's Newly McSpadden, 4-3. James led 3-2 with 10 seconds remaining but saw the Cowboy post a takedown to win in the final seconds.

Also eliminated from the Big 12 Championships in the consolation bracket was 133-pound Brian Shelton, 141-pound Seth Vernon, 165-pound Ryan Smith, 197-pound Eric Lapotsky and heavyweight Nathan Fernandez.

Smith, Lapotsky and Fernandez will not end their seasons today, however, as they automatically qualify for the NCAA Championships under the new selection system adopted this year due to the strength of the Big 12's RPI in their respective weight classes.

The championship finals are scheduled to begin at 7 p.m., as OU's Joey Fio and Kyle Terry will bid for Big 12 crowns at 125 and 149 pounds, respectively. Fans may catch the finals live on Fox Sports Oklahoma.

Regardless of the results in the championships tonight, Oklahoma is guaranteed six spots (125, 149, 165, 184, 197, and 285 weights) for the NCAA's March 19-21 in St. Louis, Mo. The Sooners will also attempt to move up in the team standings with a successful showing from Fio and Terry in the finals this evening (currently sit in fifth place).
