NORMAN, Okla. -- The path Sam Ricketts took to softball stardom wasn't exactly typical.
 
Not highly recruited out of high school, she originally enrolled in a small school without much of a softball tradition back in her home state of California. Then, a sort of revelation convinced her to come to Oklahoma without having ever visited the campus.
 
While it was a road less traveled, Ricketts soon found herself on the fast track to greatness at one of the most storied programs in the country. As a sophomore, she was one of three finalists for the USA Softball Player of the Year.
 
Ricketts has continued to pile up the accolades ever since and will likely finish her career at the top of every home run and RBI list in the school's record books.
 
Not bad for someone who was once a virtual unknown.
