OU Opens Up Spring Slate in Hawaii

KAMUELA, Hawaii – The University of Oklahoma men's golf team opens its spring tournament slate at the 19th-annual University of Hawaii at Hilo Invitational Golf Tournament at the Mauna Lani Resort North Course on Feb. 4.
The three-day, 36-hole event begins with a shotgun start at 4:30 p.m. (CT) on Wednesday. Play will begin at 11:30 a.m. (CT) on Thursday and Friday.
The OU squad closed fall play with a pair of top-two finishes including a win at the MacDonald Cup on Oct. 5. The Sooners then defeated two squads ranked in the Golfstat top-10 (No. 2 Arkansas and No. 10 Baylor) en route to a share of second place at the Baylor Intercollegiate on Oct. 28.
Oklahoma will return the same lineup from the Baylor Intercollegiate at this week's event, featuring Ben Blundell, Eric Durbin, Liam Logan, Riley Pumphrey and Chris Wilson.
“We ended the fall putting together some excellent rounds of golf and look to continue that as we open up spring play,” said OU head coach Jim Ragan. “Our guys understand that there is always some fine-tuning that needs to be done to continue improving, but we have shown in the fall that we can compete with the top teams when we are playing to our capability.”
Pumphrey guided the Sooners to their best fall in recent memory, earning a pair of career-best top-five finishes to end the autumn slate and garnering co-Big 12 Golfer of the Month status in November. The Georgetown, Texas, product is one of three OU underclassmen with a stroke average of less than 73.00 (Logan - 72.83, Pumphrey - 72.92, Wilson - 72.17).

The event features seven squad's ranked in the latest Golfweek/Sagarin top-25 rankings. Joining the Sooners in this year's tournament are defending champion and fifth-ranked Stanford, No. 8 Arizona State, Colorado, Florida State, Fresno State, No. 10 Georgia Tech, Kansas, Oregon, San Francisco, No. 2 Southern Cal, No. 20 TCU, No. 16 Texas Tech, UC-Davis, UH-Hilo, UH-Manoa and No. 11 Washington.
The 18-hole North course at the Mauna Lani Resort Golf Course is a par-72, 6,913-yard layout, with a course rating of 73.2 and a slope rating of 136. Designed by Ray Kane, Robin Nelson and Rodney Wright, the course opened in 1981.
