NORMAN, Okla. -- The No. 16 Oklahoma baseball team improved to 2-0 on the season with a 6-1 win over Western Illinois in game one of Saturday's doubleheader at L. Dale Mitchell Park.
Sophomore Antwonie Hubbard pitched six strong innings with two hits and one run allowed while junior Jamie Johnson paced the offense and finished 3-for-4 with two RBIs and three runs scored.
The Leathernecks jumped on top early on Cooper Stewart's RBI single up the middle in the third inning but Hubbard settled down after giving up the opposition's first lead of the series. The hurler did not allow a hit in his final three innings.
In the bottom of the fourth inning, Oklahoma capitalized on the first of two errors on the afternoon by Western Illinois. Jamie Johnson scored the run on a throwing error by Leatherneck catcher Cooper Stewart after he led off the frame the first of two doubles in the game.
The Sooners took their first lead in the bottom of the sixth as sophomore Elliott Blair's double to lead off the frame was followed by Jamie Johnson's two-base hit. Later in the frame, Johnson scored on a wild pitch to give OU a 3-1 lead.
In the bottom of the seventh, OU tacked on three more runs to put the game away and take a 2-0 lead in the series. Junior Bryant Hernandez led off the inning with a double down the left-field line and later scored on the Leathernecks second error, a failed pick off attempt by pitcher Randon Lingle. Jamie Johnson and junior Matt Harughty drove in a run each to cap off the scoring.
The Sooners' bullpen was solid for the second consecutive day and held the opposition scoreless over the final three frames. Sophomore Michael Rocha allowed two hits throughout the seventh and eighth while sophomore Ryan Duke closed things out in the ninth.
Game two on Saturday is slated for a 3:10 p.m. start. Following the doubleheader, the Sooners and Leathernecks will conclude the series on Sunday at 1 p.m.
