NORMAN, Okla. -- Following a standout sophomore season, Oklahoma junior pitcher Ryan Duke was named preseason All-America by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) as a second team selection on Wednesday.  Duke was one of four players from the Big 12 Conference recognized by the outlet.

Duke was named a third team All-American by the NCBWA last season after he led the Big 12 with 16 saves and ranked sixth in the nation in 2009. He was one of four Sooners to receive All-America distinction last season and is the first Sooner since David Purcey in 2003, now with the Toronto Blue Jays, to appear on a preseason list.

“The coaches are really proud of Ryan and what he has done for this program,” said OU Head Coach Sunny Golloway.  “He obviously has put up big numbers, but more importantly, he has helped this team be very successful in the last two years as a leader.  This honor speaks volumes not only for Ryan, but for our program and the quality student athletes that are coming to the University of Oklahoma.”

The Corpus Christi, Texas, native helped lead the Sooners to a second place finish in the Big 12 in 2009, a half a game behind Texas, and then on to host a regional with the a No. 7 national seed in the NCAA Tournament.

In addition to his All-America status a year ago, Duke also collected second team accolades for All-District and All-Big 12, both voted on by the nation's coaches.

Duke was successful in 16 of 18 save attempts and he turned one of those blown saves into a victory at Washington State.  The save total is the second highest in school history behind Jeff Bajenaru's 20 recorded in 2000 and he ranks third all-time for saves in a career. Even more impressive, 10 of his conversions came in Big 12 play, a conference best a year ago.

Overall, Duke (3-1) led OU with 26 appearances and struck out 43 batters and limited them to a .212 average in 36 1/3 innings.
