Sooners Share Ninth at Baylor Intercollegiate

DALLAS -- The University of Oklahoma men's golf squad tied for ninth at the Baylor Intercollegiate on Tuesday at Royal Oaks Country Club in Dallas, Texas. OU closed the event with a team total of 883 (+31).

The Sooners fired a final-round 286 (+2) at the par-71, 7068-yard layout, their lowest round of the 54-hole event. Oklahoma played its final 36 holes at +10, but couldn't overcome a tournament-opening 305 (+21).

“We finally settled down and played some decent golf after getting off to a rough start,” said head coach Ryan Hybl. “We can't put ourselves in an early hole though against quality competition, which is something that we will have to improve upon as the season progresses. I thought we showed some glimpse of good golf in the second and third rounds, but weren't consistent enough overall and it was too little too late after the way we opened up.”

Leading OU was the senior duo of Tyler Rody (74-74-68) and Ben Blundell (75-73-68), who both shared 14th. Both final rounds marked season lows for the pair.

Ryan Sirman tied for 52nd in his season debut after rounds of 78, 70 and 80, while Riley Pumphrey (78-75-76) was a stroke back at +16 in a share of 53rd.

Rounding out the OU scoring was redshirt freshman Cole Wiederkehr (82-75-74) at +18 in his collegiate debut.

The 12-team field resumed second-round play this morning after inclement weather forced the suspension of yesterday's afternoon round as the squads were making the turn. OU rebounded from its tournament-opening miscues with a 13-stroke improvement in the second round.

Defending NCAA Champion Texas A&M posted its second straight Baylor Intercollegiate win, while SMU's James Kwon took home medalist honors at -6, two shots clear of the field.

The Sooners close out the fall portion of their schedule at the CordeValle Collegiate in San Martin, Calif., on November 9-11.
