Sooners Face Stiff Test at Arkansas

NORMAN, Okla. – The University of Oklahoma men's, ranked 23rd nationally, and women's cross country teams head to Fayetteville, Ark., this Saturday, October 17, to compete in the 2009 Chile Pepper Festival.
The Chile Pepper Festival will mark the first competition for both Sooner teams since the Roy Griak Invitational in September, where the men's team finished second. The event will provide a stiff challenge as the Sooners compete against a number of ranked teams with the women taking on No. 12 Baylor, No. 20 Texas Tech, No. 22 BYU and No. 26 SMU. The men will face two top-25 teams in No. 4 Oklahoma State and No. 25 Arkansas.
The Chile Pepper Cross Country Festival hosts approximately 3,500 runners and over 4,000 spectators each year and is one of the largest cross country festivals in the nation. The festival will be held at the University of Arkansas cross country course, with the men covering 10,000 meters and the women 6,000. The men's collegiate race begins at 9:45 a.m. CST, while the women follow at 10:30 a.m.
The Sooner men will be led by team captains junior Rob Sorrell and sophomore Kevin Schwab. Juniors Clay Mayes and Jeremy Sudbury, redshirt-freshman Kevin Williams, and true freshmen Pat Gomez and Bobby Nicolls will also be competing Saturday. Redshirt-freshman Bill Kogel, who finished first among Oklahoma men at the Griak Invitational with a 10th-place finish, rounds out the men's team.
The women's team will be anchored by senior Lauren Watson, who finished 30th at the Griak Invitational. Fellow senior Ellen Dobbin, junior Lindsay Pierson, sophomore Molly Ferguson and freshmen Erin Hargens and Tati Ogan complete the women's team for Saturday's race.
