Two Wins Down, Two to Go

NORMAN, Okla. – The University of Oklahoma wrestling team won its first two matches in the morning session of the Lonestar Duals in Grand Prairie, Texas, on Saturday, defeating North Carolina (27-3) and Nebraska-Kearney (32-7).

The No. 11th-ranked Sooners improved to 9-0, and await the night-cap where they will square-off against Appalachian State (6 p.m.) and Stanford (8 p.m.). With at least one victory tonight, Oklahoma will record its 14th straight season of at least 10 wins under head coach Jack Spates.

Ranked No. 9 nationally, Jeff James recorded two wins this morning, along with teammates Ryan Smith and No. 19 Nathan Fernandez. Several others were able to see their first-dual action on the season, as 17 Sooners competed against the Tar Heels and Lopers.

The remaining five individually-ranked Sooners – Joey Fio (No. 13), Eric Lapotsky (No. 13), Kyle Terry (No. 14), Shane Vernon (No. 14) and Pat Flynn (No. 19) – all posted a win against North Carolina.
