NORMAN, Okla. – The University of Oklahoma men's tennis team began fall practice today at the Headington Family Tennis Center. The team went through the first day of a series of intrasquad matches to determine who will be traveling to which event this fall.
Sooners Andrei Daescu and Sergey Avdeyev will start out their fall seasons in Costa Mesa, Calif., at the Costa Mesa Pro Futures Classic, Sept. 12-15. The other event travel squads will be decided this week with some going to Annapolis, Md., for the Navy Invitational, Sept. 12-14 while the others will be making a trip to Waco, Texas, for the HEB Baylor Intercollegiate, Sept. 26-28.
Not only are the 2008-2009 seasons kicking off but the new Gregg Wadley Pavilion reached a new stage in construction. The 72nd and final wall panel was put in place today. Each of these panels weighs around 115,000 pounds and is 14 inches thick. The construction crew will now begin the inside and roof work.
Located just east of the Headington Family Tennis Center outdoor courts, the indoor facility is scheduled for a December 2008 completion.
Highlights of the new, 55,000 square-foot facility include six air-conditioned courts, championship-quality lighting and surface, and approximately 375 chair-back seats for spectators, which are elevated between the courts.
Upon its completion, the new Gregg Wadley Tennis Pavilion will give OU's men's and women's tennis programs one of the finest practice and competition venues in the country.
