NORMAN, Okla. - The University of Oklahoma wrestling squad officially kicked of the 2008-09 season Friday afternoon with a workout and conditioning session at the Everest Indoor Stadium and Barry Switzer Center.
This year's Sooner team enters the preseason with seven starters returning from last year, including three NCAA qualifiers in Joey Fio (125 pounds), Zack Bailey (141 pounds) and Will Rowe (149 pounds). Additionally, head coach Jack Spates welcomes 13 newcomers to the team.
Although official practice does not begin until later in September, the OU coaching staff is allowed a limited amount of hours each week to prepare the team for the season.
"The intensity and the focus of these early workouts will set the tone for this season," Sooner assistant coach Robbie Waller said. "I am also looking forward to evaluating our newcomers to see how they are adjusting to high-level competition in all phases of training."
The Sooners, coming off of a 14-5 overall record last season, will begin their championship quest in November. Stay tuned to SoonerSports.com for an official release of the 2008-09 schedule and official introduction to the 13 newcomers.
