NORMAN, Okla. - The University of Oklahoma dropped its first game of the season, falling to Wichita State, 3-0, on Friday night at McCasland Field House. In the day's final game of the Sooner Legends/Nike Invitational, OU (1-1) was unable to answer the Shockers (2-0), who defeated 10th-ranked Cal Poly earlier in the day.
"We have to come out tomorrow and be prepared for Cal Poly," Oklahoma head coach Santiago Restrepo said. "We have some things we need to work on. We have to improve on defense and passing. We can't allow our opponents to out dig us."
Redshirt sophomore Francie Ekwerekwu led the Sooners with 10 kills and a .474 hitting percentage. Freshman Brianne Barker tallied 24 assists, while senior Lacy Barnes led the team in digs with 20. Junior Jackie Fotu was the Sooners' leading blocker with 2.5.
The first set went extra points with the Shockers eventually taking a 32-30 win. The two teams traded the lead six times and tied a total of 19 times. In the second set, the Shockers built a lead early en route to a 25-13 win. In the third set, the Sooners fought hard but WSU came away with a 26-24 win to take the match.
Emily Stockman led the Shockers with 16 kills, while Mary Elizabeth Hooper totaled 26 assists. Two Shockers posted double-digit digs, led by Kelly Broussard's 27. Stockman added 18.
Action at the Sooner Legends/Nike Invitational resumes Saturday morning with Michigan State and Wichita State at 11 a.m. The 10th ranked Mustangs and OU follow at 1 p.m. Admission is free to both games.
