BoomerBlast: It's Game Time!

NORMAN, Okla. -- The time has finally arrived.
After a three-month hiatus for summer break, another year of Sooner sports is upon us. All the anticipation, speculation and prognostication of a new season can be put to rest as the real thing begins this weekend.
With students back on campus and classes resuming, there will be a different buzz around Norman this week. The exitement will reach its apex over the weekend as the 2008 fall sports season kicks off.
With volleyball hosting its own tournament Friday and Saturday, soccer opening up under the lights Friday night and football kicking off the season Saturday evening, we hit the ground running at full speed.
We look forward to seeing you all out there supporting your Sooners throughout the season, as it should be another exciting and successful year in Oklahoma Athletics.

A new era begins for the Sooner soccer team under new head coach Nicole Nelson.
Since her arrival in Norman last winter, Nelson, a native of Mustang, Okla., made it clear that she was driven to place OU among the elite in the nation.
"I am determined to make winning championships a Sooner soccer tradition," Nelson said.
After helping bring in a talented group of newcomers and working with the entire team in the spring, Nelson likes the makeup of the 2008 Sooners. Oklahoma returns 17 letterwinners, including seven players with starting experience (at least 10 games), in addition to a talented recruiting class.

The OU football team begins its 114th season of college football on Saturday against Chattanooga and has its sights set on a third straight Big 12 Championship.
The Sooners have made winning conference titles a habit, with five trophies in the last eight seasons, but consecutive Fiesta Bowl losses have left a sour taste in their mouths and leave OU craving something sweeter heading into this season.
With much of the cast responsible for last year's league title returning, Oklahoma is the favorite to capture another conference crown and is primed for a run at the national championship.

The Oklahoma volleyball team aims to make its own history this year by advancing to the NCAA Tournament for a third consecutive season.
With only two starters returning from a year ago, the Sooners will rely on a number of youngsters to step in and play critical roles. But with senior defensive specialist Lacy Barnes, junior Bridget Laplante and pre-season All-Big 12 pick Francie Ekwerekwu returning, OU has a solid corps to build around.
Fifth-year head coach Santiago Restrepo is confident the Sooners can maintain the standard they have set over the last two seasons.
"We only have one senior, but if we mesh right away, we will not miss a beat," Restrepo said. "All of the returners have worked extremely hard over the summer break. We know what some of them are capable of doing on the court."
