Hires Complete Rowing Staff

NORMAN, Okla. - Head women's rowing coach Leeanne Crain announced the hiring of Andy Derrick and Kris Muhl as assistant coaches to complete her staff Friday.

Both assistants were in the same position under Crain at the University of Central Florida before coming to OU. Derrick will serve as the program's novice coach and recruiting coordinator and Muhl will assist the varsity team and handle the director of operations duties.

"I am extremely excited to have my staff in place for the upcoming year," Crain said. "I'm privileged to have two of my former assistant coaches joining me here at The University of Oklahoma."

Muhl gained experience coaching the men's rowing teams at The University of California, The University of Iowa and Northwestern University. His lightweight women's squad was ranked as high as No. 3 in the nation last season at UCF. Derrick's novice squad went 38-3 and earned a bronze medal at the 2008 NCAA South/Central Sprints last season.

"Andy and Kris are two of the best young coaches I've worked with," Crain said. "Their talents will be put to use as we begin to build our team here at OU."

Crain also announced the hiring of former UCF graduate assistant Megan Mitchell to serve in the same capacity at Oklahoma. Mitchell recently graduated from UCF and led the lightweight team as captain under Crain.

"One of the greatest strengths of the staff is our shared vision for the future of rowing at OU," Crain said. "We are equally committed to building a program that is highly competitive and one that produces athletes who are successful in all realms - from performance on the water to performance in the classroom."

The rowing program is in its first season at Oklahoma and will begin competition next October.
