NORMAN, Okla. - A total of 14 University of Oklahoma Athletics publications have earned national recognition from the College Sports Information Directors of America. Seven achieved Best in Nation citations.
"Our media relations and graphics staffs have been remarkably consistent in producing publications that are equally appealing to the news media and prospective student-athletes," said Kenny Mossman, Senior Associate Athletics Director. "The books and posters are all part of building our image and it is gratifying to see those efforts honored on the national stage."
Three of the publications that won awards were produced by student interns in the media relations office.
Undergraduate interns Mitch Heckart and Kellen Coleman had the No. 1 wrestling guide and No. 2 women's golf guide, respectively. Graduate assistant Phillip Rogers had the No. 3 women's gymnastics guide.
"We have a wonderful partnership with the Gaylord College of Journalism and our full-time staff members have truly embraced the mentor's role in helping the students grow," Mossman said. "It's a win-win situation for the university and our department."
Scott Matthews, the athletics department's graphic designer, won six awards for his work.
Here is a rundown of the awards won by OU staff for the 2007-08 school year. The books are collective efforts of the media relations staff. The name listed is that of the project coordinator.
Baseball Guide (Craig Moran) - No. 7 in the nation ... Women's Golf (Kellen Coleman) - No. 2 in the nation ... Football Bowl Guide (Jared Thompson, David Bassity) - No. 1 in the nation ... Men's and Women's Track and Field Guide (David Bassity) - No. 1 in the nation ... Wrestling (Mitch Heckart) - No. 1 in the nation ... Softball (Jessica Summers) - No. 2 in the nation ... Women's Gymnastics (Phillips Rogers) - No. 3 in the nation ... Women's Soccer (Craig Moran) - No. 6 in the nation ... Track and Field Poster (Scott Matthews) - No. 5 in the nation ... Women's Gymnastics Media Guide Cover (Scott Matthews) - No. 1 in the nation ... Track and Field Media Guide Cover (Scott Matthews) - No. 1 in the nation ...
