NORMAN, Okla. -- The 2008 Summer Olympics are set to be begin in less than three weeks and former Sooner Jonathan Horton met with local members of the media one last time in Norman before the U.S. Men's Gymnastics team departs on July 29 for Beijing.
The year has already been a busy one for the Houston, Texas, native. After being named the nation's top collegiate gymnast, Horton helped OU win the 2008 National Championship and then recently got engaged after being selected to the U.S. Olympic Team.
Now the goal for Horton is to represent his country and help his team bring home the gold medal.
“I believe I can help the U.S. win a gold medal,” Horton said. “I am very confident and I am pumped and ready to go to Beijing. I am very relaxed and feel great.”
Horton recently returned from the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo., where he and the rest of the U.S. Men's Gymnastics team have been working out and preparing for the 2008 Olympics.
“We are all ready to go to Beijing and compete on the world stage,” said Horton. “We are all healthy and feel good about our chances.”
Horton, along with Oklahoma head coach Mark Williams, and the rest of U.S. Men's Gymnastics team will leave on July 29 for San Francisco, Calif., and then arrive in Beijing, China on July 31. The team will then train until the 2008 Olympic Summer Olympics begin on August 8 with opening ceremonies.
Competition will begin on August 9 with the team, all-around, and event qualification. The team finals competition will be on August 12 and the all-around competition on August 14. On August 17 the floor exercise and pommel horse finals will be held. The next day on August 18 will be the still rings and the vault finals, and finally the parallel bars and high bar finals will be on August 19. A gala will be held on August 20 and the team will depart for home on August 21.
“The U.S has a very talented team that it is sending to the Olympic Games,” said Mark Williams. “Jon is keeping a strong tradition alive for men's gymnastics here at the University of Oklahoma. He has a chance to follow in the steps of Bart Connor. I am very excited and very proud of him.”
Horton is only the second gymnast in school history to make the U.S. men's gymnastics team. Bart Connor was a three-time U.S. Olympic team member competing in the 1976, 1980, and 1984 Summer Games and was a two-time gold medalist.
The 2008 Summer Olympics will be held August 8-24 in Beijing, China and will be televised by NBC. (Check local listings for time and availability in your area).
