NORMAN, Okla. -- Proving they can score both on the mat and in the classroom, 18 wrestlers were named to the Spring 2008 Big 12 Commissioners Honor Roll, the conference announced Friday.
“I am very proud of these student-athletes for taking care of business not only in athletics, but in the classroom as well,” head coach Jack Spates said. “This recognition is well-deserved.”
The honor roll is an inclusive honor for all sports sponsored by the membership of the league. It recognizes student-athletes who maintain a 3.0 or higher grade point average the previous semester and is recorded and released each semester.
Leading the team on the list is senior Joshua Weitzel with a 4.0 GPA. Weitzel was also named academic first-team by the Big 12 Conference in March. The Lincoln University, Pa., native racked up a 26-5 record last season and earned his third trip to the NCAA Championships.
Eight other starters from last year's squad were also recognized. Zack Bailey, Max Dean, Nathan Fernandez, Joel Flaggert, Jeff James, Will Rowe, Brian Shelton and Chad Terry joined Weitzel on the list.
