TEMPE, Ariz. - The Oklahoma Sooners' magical run over the last three weeks ended on Sunday with a 12-0 defeat at the hands of No. 4 Arizona State in the championship round of the 2008 Tempe Regional at Packard Stadium.
The Sooners earned their third bid in the championship round of an NCAA Regional in the last three postseason appearances after defeating No. 22 Vanderbilt, 11-10, earlier on Sunday off Aaron Baker's two-run, walk-off homer in the bottom of ninth.
The Sun Devils quickly extinguished OU's momentum after posting an 9-0 advantage after the first five frames, including six runs in the bottom of the third inning. Arizona State (48-11) advances to super regional play against the winner of the Long Beach Regional next weekend.
"At the end of the day, Arizona State proved to be too much," said OU head coach Sunny Golloway. "It's a terrific lineup and they have terrific arms on the mound.
"But our Oklahoma Sooners' team is a young team. And as you go down through the lineups of all the teams in the field, we have a chance to return most of our players and have a chance to be very, very special. And the experience we gained here will be valuable to the future of our program."
Arizona State took the first lead of the game on Kiel Roling's double to the gap in left center to bring around Ike Davis who began the bottom of the second inning with a single off Jeremy Erben.
The Sun Devils extended their lead in the bottom of the third frame with six runs. OU's 7-0 deficit after three innings was identical to the start from Saturday night's meeting with Arizona State. The Sooners gave up five hits and two walks in the inning, including four consecutive singles and a three-run double by Pat Bordes.
The extra-base hit by Bordes ended Erben's start. The OU starter dropped to 1-4 on the season after allowing seven runs off eight hits in 2 2/3 innings of work.
ASU starter Josh Satow cruised to the victory behind his club's 15 hits. Satow improved to 9-3 after scattering three hits and a walk over 7 1/3 innings.
The Sooners placed runners in scoring position in the first, sixth and eighth innings but were unable to break up the shutout. Jamie Johnson, Mike Gosse, Bryant Hernandez and Matt Harughty combined for OU's four hits in the ballgame.
Following the final game of the regional, Aaron Baker, Mike Gosse and Aljay Davis were named to the All-Tournament Team.
The Sooners finished the season at 36-26-1 in 2008. The Sooners can return all but seven seniors from this year's club (Aljay Davis, Jarod Freeman, Mike Gosse, Jake McCarter, Ryan Mottern, Drew Roberts and Zach Sawyer) as the 2008 MLB Draft will take place on June 5-6.
