Women's Hoops Begins European Tour

NORMAN, Okla. -- The University of Oklahoma women's basketball team begins an international road trip this weekend as it will travel through Rome, Italy, and Athens, Greece, over the course of 10 days, beginning early Saturday.

Notable stops will include the Colosseum, Pantheon, Vatican, St. Peter's Basilica and the Acropolis as the team journeys through the Mediterranean countries.

"The first and foremost goal we have as coaches is to educate," OU head coach Sherri Coale said. "I don't know of a better way to study other cultures than to immerse oneself in them.

"Fortunately at the University of Oklahoma, we have the opportunity to reward our student-athletes with experiences that are both unique and immeasurably valuable in molding their perception of the world around them."

It won't be all sightseeing for the Sooners as they will play five friendly contests with international teams during the tour.

The Sooners will play European league club teams Acquario Palestrina and Romasistemi Pomezia while in Italy and three matches against the Greek National Select Team, in Athens, as it prepares for the 2008 Olympic Games.

The international road trip is the second in four years for the OU women's basketball team.  Coale's squad visited France and Switzerland following the 2004 season.

Sunday, May 11 - Arrive in Rome, Sightseeing tour of ancient Rome
Monday, May 12 - Sightseeing tour of Vatican City, game versus Acquario Palestrina
Tuesday, May 13 - Sightseeing tour of Rome, game versus Romasistemi Pomezia
Wednesday, May 14 - Leave Rome for Athens, Greece
Thursday, May 15 - Sightseeing tour of ancient Athens, game versus Greek Senior Select Team
Friday, May 16 - Sightseeing of Athens, game versus Greek Senior Select Team
Saturday, May 17 - Cruise of Greek islands
Sunday, May 18 - Tour of Temple of Poseiden, Mediteranean coastline, game versus Greek Senior Select Team
Monday, May 19 - Tour of Athens
Tuesday, May 20 - Return to Oklahoma
