NORMAN, Okla. -- Former University of Oklahoma golfer Phillip Bryan has been named the program's assistant coach.  The appointment was announced Friday by head coach Jim Ragan.

A four-year letterman with the Sooners, Bryan was a member of the 2006 Big 12 Championship squad that took home the conference title at Southern Hills in Tulsa.

A senior this past season, the Mustang, Okla., native capped off his collegiate career by being named to the PING All-Region team earlier this week.

"Phillip represented the University of Oklahoma in a first class way as a student athlete and I have no doubt that he will do the same as our assistant coach," Ragan said.  "He carried himself with class and displayed a work ethic second to none while playing at OU.  He took care of business in the classroom, at practice and competed at the highest level of Division I golf with as much determination as I have ever seen."

Bryan also earned Academic All-Big 12 distinction every year he was eligible for league acclaim.

"I would like to thank Coach Ragan and the administration for this opportunity," said Bryan.  "I am very excited about the future and contributing to the success of the Oklahoma golf program."

Bryan was the most recent recipient of the Charlie Coe award at OU which recognizes the most valuable player on the men's golf squad. Bryan carried a 73.71 stroke average his senior year to lead the team.

Before attending OU, Bryan won the National PGA Junior Championship and notched several top American Junior Golf Association (AJGA) finishes.

Added Ragan, "Phillip has earned the respect of everyone that he has come into contact with during his time at OU -- current and former players, the administration and other coaches, fellow competitors, alumni, donors and parents."

Bryan graduated from Mustang High School in Mustang, Okla., before attending the University of Oklahoma.
