OKLAHOMA CITY -- The Oklahoma Sooners were unable to overcome an early deficit and fell 11-1 in game two of the Ford Beldam Series against No. 9 Oklahoma State on Saturday in front of 13,066 fans at AT&T Bricktown Ballpark.
Oklahoma State jumped out to another quick start with four runs in the first inning thanks to a pair of Sooner errors and RBI singles off the bats of Neil Medchill and Rebel Ridling. Dean Green capped off the scoring in the frame with a two-run single off OU starter Andrew Doyle.
"For two straight games we haven't done that (gotten off to a good start)," said OU head coach Sunny Golloway. "That's been the key in the ball games, allowing their guys to really pitch well and settle in and our bats being more pressure packed than they really need to be.
"I think if we get off to a good start, you will see a different club. We will be ready tomorrow."
The loss drops OU to 31-23-1 overall and 8-17-1 in Big 12 play. The Sooners remain in ninth place in the Big 12 standings while Oklahoma State moved into second place with a 40-14 overall mark and 18-8 record in conference games.
Oklahoma now has one game remaining in the 2008 regular season and will need a win tomorrow, coupled with a Kansas State win over Kansas, in order to advance to the 2008 Phillips 66 Big 12 Championship as the tournament's eighth seed.
Just like Friday, the Sooners were forced to rally from behind early in Saturday's game. OU got on the board in the third inning as Casey Johnson scored off a passed ball and wild pitch after he was issued a one-out walk. But the run was not enough as the Cowboys capitalized on 11 walks issued by the OU pitching staff throughout the night.
The Cowboys struck back in the top of the fourth with a pair of runs as Doyle and Ryan Mottern combined to walk four consecutive batters.
Doyle (7-4) allowed six runs, four earned, off seven hits and four walks in his 3 2/3 innings of work while his counterpart, Tyler Lyons, cruised to his 10th victory of the year. The OSU lefty improved to 10-2 after tossing his fourth complete game of the year with nine strikeouts. Lyons allowed one run, unearned, off six hits and two walks.
With Lyons in control throughout the game, Oklahoma State increased its advantage in the fifth as another walked batter came across the plate on Donnie Webb's triple to right center. In the top of eighth, the Cowboys plated four more runs to put the game out of reach. Four different Cowboys connected for two hits in the game, led by Green and Thomas Belza who drove in two runs apiece.
Jamie Johnson was the Sooners' lone bright spot on the offensive side of things. The sophomore right fielder had two of the Sooners' six hits on the night.
The Ford Bedlam Series concludes on Sunday at 4 p.m. and will broadcast live on KOKC 1520 AM from AT&T Bricktown Ballpark. OU's Ryan Duke (6-4, 3.28 ERA) will start opposite OSU's Matt Gardner (5-2, 4.86 ERA).
