ATHENS, Greece -- Oklahoma dropped its first game of its European tour, falling 94-82 to the Greece National Select Team Thursday night.
Carlee Roethlisberger scored 17 and Nyeshia Stevenson added 15, but the Sooners could not overcome Greece's 59 percent field goal shooting.
Stella Kaltsipou scored 26 points for Greece, which benefited from 37 trips to the free throw line as the American team was still learning to cope with international rules interpretations.
Oklahoma led 21-19 at the end of the first quarter but allowed Greece to take a 45-40 halftime advantage. In the second quarter, OU knotted the game at 31 with 4:20 remaining before Greece went on a 10-0 run over the next three minutes.
After closing to gap to 49-48, the Greeks found space in the Sooners' zone defense and took its lead up 10 before Oklahoma responded.
The Sooners closed the gap to 64-61 at the end of the third but Greece opened the final period making its first three field goals to take a 72-65 lead. Lauren Willis drove the lane for a lay-up and drained a 3 on the next possession to close the gap, but OU could do nothing more in the last minutes as it could not get within less than four points before the final buzzer sounded.
The Sooners will play the Greek team twice more before it returns to the United States next week.
