ARDMORE, Okla. - The University of Oklahoma men's golf team concluded its regular season with a ninth-place finish at the 17th annual Perry Maxwell Intercollegiate in Ardmore, Okla., on Sunday. The Sooners shot a final-round team score of 289 (+9) at the par-70, 6,453-yard Dornick Hills Country Club.
Tournament host Oklahoma State won its eighth consecutive Maxwell title with a three-shot victory over Michigan, the overnight leader. The Cowboys closed with a final-round 269 (-11), finishing the event at 31-under-par in a scoring format that counts the four best scores on each hole instead of the top four individual rounds.
Bill Rankin of Michigan took home medalist honors after a Sunday round of 69. It was his third consecutive round in red figures (67-66-69) and resulted in a four-shot victory over OSU freshman Kevin Tway.
Leading the way for the Sooners was freshman Liam Logan, standing 27th after rounds of 72, 72 and 74 (+8).
Two shots back was lone upperclassman Phillip Bryan (Mustang, Okla.) who fired rounds of 75, 69 and 76 in his final collegiate tournament in his home state, finishing 35th.
Sophomore Tyler Rody concluded the event in 40th-place with rounds of 74, 73, 75.
Rounding out the OU team scoring were Jesse Schutte and Ryan Sirman who finished the event in 54th and 60th, respectively. Schutte carded a final-round 85, standing at +18, while Sirman was 11 shots back after rounds of 80, 81 and 78.
Eric Durbin (74-79-72) and Ben Blundell (75-79-73) both fired their lowest rounds of the tournament on Sunday, competing unattached from team scoring.
OU returns to action May 15-17 at the NCAA West Regional in Bremerton, Wash., at the Gold Mountain Golf Club. The Sooners will battle the field for one of 10 spots into the NCAA Championship.
