Sooners Enter Big 12 Championship

NORMAN, Okla. - The University of Oklahoma women's tennis team (11-11, 4-7) received the No. 8 seed in the 2008 Big 12 Championships, which will be held in College Station, Texas. The Sooners will begin play Thursday, April 28, at 10 a.m. when they take on No. 9 seeded, Texas Tech University.

Oklahoma was awarded the No. 8 seed with a 5-2 win over Texas Tech on April 13 in Lubbock, Texas.

"We are really looking forward to starting post season," OU head Coach Mark Johnson said. "Texas Tech is a very good team, but I think we are ready. The girls have had a good week of practice."

OU enters the match after finishing the season with a 4-3 win over the University of Missouri on Saturday, April 19.

The Sooners are currently led by freshman stand-out Ana-Maria Constantinescu. The Romania native ended regular season play 14-5 and 6-4 in the Big 12 at the No. 1 position. In doubles action, Constantinescu partnered with senior Chelsea Orr to go 14-6 and 5-5 in the Big 12 at the No. 1 spot.

"Ana has really done a lot for our team, both on and off the court," Johnson said. "She is very encouraging to her teammates and always brings a positive energy."

Baylor University received the No. 1 seed after winning its fourth straight regular season Big 12 title. The Lady Bears, who went undefeated in the Big 12, will receive a first round bye, along with No. 2 seeded Texas, No. 3 seeded Texas A&M and No. 4 seeded Colorado.

In-state rival Oklahoma State earned the sixth seed after close tie-breakers with Kansas and Nebraska, who received the fifth and seventh seeds respectively.
