Let the Madness Begin!
March 17, 2008 | Athletics
NORMAN, Okla. -- While the general student population is enjoying spring break at a variety of exotic destinations, OU's student-athletes are gearing up for the most heated competition of the year.
The month of March is without a doubt the busiest and also perhaps the most-anticipated time of the year in college athletics.
It's hard to avoid cliches, but this is tournament time, where anything can happen, when hopes translate into dreams and dreams become reality.
With the NCAA Basketball Tournaments tipping off this week, the nation will again become captivated by the Cinderella stories of those who conquer the seemingly impossible.
Oklahoma's men's and women's basketball programs will attempt to begin writing their own fantasy scripts this week in Birmingham, Ala., and location to be determined, respectively.
The madness of March extends far beyond basketball, however, as literally every sport on campus is currently in action.
Consider the following:
Five OU wrestlers will square off against the nation's best at the 2008 NCAA Wrestling Championships this week, March 20-22, at the Scottrade Center in St. Louis, Mo.
The Sooner men's gymnastics team wraps up the regular season in State College, Pa., versus the defending national champion Penn State Nittany Lions.
Before hosting both the Big 12 Championship and the NCAA South Central Regional in the coming weeks, the Sooner women's gymnastics team attempts to complete an undefeated regular season this weekend at Minnesota.
The nationally-ranked OU softball team hosts a midweek game versus Missouri State before opening Big 12 Conference play this weekend against Kansas.
Baseball travels first to South Florida for a two-game set and then heads to Lincoln, Neb., for its Big 12 opener against the Cornhuskers.
Oklahoma's men's and women's golf teams will be enjoying the sunshine in California and Texas, respectively. The men's golf team travels to San Diego for the Barona Collegiate Cup, while women's golf is in Austin for the Betsy Rawls Invitational.
The men's and women's tennis teams travel together to Jacksonville to take on the Dolphins during the week, and the women will also head to Ft. Worth to face TCU on Saturday.
Track & Field just wrapped up the indoor season at the NCAA Championships last weekend, but the Sooners go right back to work this weekend at the Tulsa Duels.
In addition, all of Oklahoma's fall sports teams are in the middle of spring workouts.
College athletics truly is a year-round commitment, but for so many student-athletes, now is the time when all the preparation meets its culmination.
I hope I speak for Sooner fans everywhere when I say... "Let the madness begin!"
