Sooners Fall to Texas A&M

NORMAN, Okla. - The University of Oklahoma women's tennis team (6-5, 0-2) fell 6-1 to No. 26 Texas A&M (8-4, 2-0) Sunday at the Headington Family Tennis Center.

With the wind contributing significantly, the Sooners took an early 0-1 deficit after falling at two of the three doubles positions.

"It was a tough loss," said OU head coach Mark Johnson. "You have to give credit to Texas A&M, they are a good team. We did some good things, but didn't stay consistent."

Oklahoma's only doubles win came at the No. 1 position. The duo of Ana-Maria Constantinescu and Chelsea Orr bounced back after taking their first loss of the season Saturday against the Longhorns. After reaching 7-7 the team's played a tie-breaker, since the doubles point had already been decided. The Oklahoma pair, now 9-1, defeated Aggie's Tiffany Clifford and Christi Liles 8-7, (5).

"We were not happy with the way things turned out yesterday against Texas," Orr said. "We came in to today's match with the mind set that we would not lose again. I thought we played well and did a good job of staying focused."

In singles action, Tara Eckel represented Oklahoma at the No. 6 position. The freshman defeated Stephanie Davidson of Texas A&M, 7-5, 6-1, giving Oklahoma its only point and lone singles win.

"Tara has been playing very well for us," Johnson said. "She is really coming along and improving with each match she plays."

The Sooners will spend spring break in Jacksonville, Fla., where they will take on Jacksonville University Wednesday, March 19, at 10 a.m.
