WAIKOLOA VILLAGE, Hawaii - The University of Oklahoma men's golf team stands in seventh place after the opening round of the 18-team UH-Hilo Intercollegiate on Wednesday at the Waikoloa Village golf course in Waikoloa Village, Hawaii.

The Sooners took advantage of unusually calm weather in posting a 3-under-par 277 team score at the par-70, 6,738-yard course.

Three OU golfers (Jesse Schutte - 67, Eric Durbin - 69, Ryan Sirman - 69) were among a group of 36 players that finished at par or better in the first round after the unusually calm trade winds had completely subsided as the teams were making the turn.

Schutte, the 2007 Big 12 Newcomer of the Year, stands in a tie for 13th in leading the Sooners.  A stroke back is the duo of Durbin and Sirman who sit in 20th.  Sophomore Tyler Rody shot 71, finishing the day in a tie for 36th,  while fellow sophomore Ben Blundell stands in a tie for 52nd after a 2-over-par 72.

Arizona State and Texas Tech share the first-round lead at 9-under (271). The two squads are followed closely by Oregon State (273), USC (274), Stanford and Georgia Tech (275), Oregon (279) and Washington (280) as nine squads are within 10 shots of each other after 18 holes of play.

ASU's Stephan Gross holds a one-stroke lead over the field after posting a 6-under-par 64.
