LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- The Sooners (1-1) won game two of the doubleheader on Saturday night with a thrilling 3-2 victory in 12 innings over No. 1 UCLA (1-1) at Jackie Robinson Stadium. After dropping a heartbreaking loss in game one, the Sooners rebounded to record the program's first win over a No. 1 ranked team since the 2006 Houston Super Regional in game two against Rice.
OU held a 2-0 lead until the Bruins rallied in the bottom of the fifth inning to tie the game up. That was the end of the scoring until the 12th inning. The Sooners' broke the 2-2 tie after six scoreless innings on sophomore Spencer Selby's sacrifice fly to center field in the top of the 12th inning.
The game winning run was made possible as junior J.T. Wise started things off in the 12th on a single off of pitcher Dan Klein's (1-1) glove. Wise then moved to third on a single by sophomore Aaron Baker and scored off Selby's fly ball to center. Selby also plated OU's first run on a solo shot to left field in the second inning.
"We found victory today and I was proud of our guys' effort," said OU head coach Sunny Golloway. "I think it's really good for a young club to have to work that hard and not give up at the No. 1 team in the country. They (the Bruins) are extremely talented."
The game nearly ended on several occasions as OU stranded 12 base runners and UCLA 7. The Bruins' best chance potentially came in the bottom of the 11th. OU sophomore Andrew Doyle (1-0) entered his fifth inning of relief and retired 15 straight batters, six via the strikeout, until the bottom of the frame. Alden Carrithers broke the streak with a single to lead off the 11th and reached third base on a failed pick-off by Doyle at first base. That forced OU to intentionally walk consecutive batters and hope for a force play at home. Luckily for the Sooners, the plan worked to perfection, and then some, as they turned a 6-4-3 double play to end the inning.
Doyle finished the game with 6 1/3 scoreless innings and with only two hits allowed. Senior Jake McCarter registered his first save with no hits allowed and a strikeout after giving up the game-winner in game two.
Oklahoma, which outhit UCLA, 10-7, had a good chance in the 10th, as Baker was robbed of a potential home run at the wall by Gabe Cohen and one batter later, left fielder Brady Dolan took away extra bases from Selby on a shot to the gap in left-center field.
Selby gave the Sooners the game's initial lead with a solo homer in the top of the second inning. Selby's shot to left field was the first of his career and OU's first long ball this season. The sophomore finished with a game-high three hits and two RBIs.
OU increased its lead to 2-0 on sophomore Jamie Johnson's sacrifice fly to right field in the fifth inning. The RBI plated sophomore Bryant Hernandez, who doubled deep to the center-field wall earlier in the frame.
UCLA cut the lead in half on an infield single in the bottom of the fifth inning and tied the game on Jermaine Curtis' RBI single up the middle of the infield later in the frame. With two runners on the corners and nobody out, OU starter, Michael Rocha, pitched himself out of jam. The true freshman struck out UCLA's No. 2, 3 and 4 hitters in consecutive at-bats to end the frame and hold UCLA at bay.
Rocha left the game after five innings pitched. The freshman, who was the fifth newcomer to pitch on Saturday, allowed two Bruin runs off five hits and a walk. Rocha finished his first start as a Sooner with five strikeouts and was relieved by Doyle.
The Sooners and Bruins will look to conclude the series on Sunday at 1 p.m. PT. The forecast in Los Angeles is calling for rain showers throughout the morning and afternoon.
The game can be heard live on KOKC 1520 AM and Oklahoma All-Access.
