WILKES-BARRE, Pa. – Three University of Oklahoma wrestlers were crowned champions and another placed third at the 76th annual Wilkes Open in Wilkes-Barre, Pa., last weekend.
Winning titles for OU were Brian Shelton at 133 pounds, Will Rowe at 149 pounds and 157-pound Chad Terry. Each went unscathed on the day, going 4-0. Redshirt freshman Seth Vernon placed third, battling back from an opening defeat by reeling off four straight wins in the consolation bracket.
All four wrestlers posted a fall at the tournament and Rowe, a senior from Arlington, Texas, added three tech-falls on the afternoon. Terry outscored his opponents by a 34-15 margin and Shelton outscored his, 27-6.
The Oklahoma team, ranked a season-high No. 11, returns to dual-action this Saturday, Jan. 3, when it travels to Arlington, Texas, for the Lonestar Duals. Scheduled to compete against the Sooners are North Carolina, Stanford, Appalachian State and Nebraska-Kearney.
