IRVING, Texas — Fresh off a pair of career-best top-five finishes to end the fall season, OU's Riley Pumphrey was named co-Big 12 Golfer of the Month, the conference announced Wednesday. The selection marked the first conference honor for the Georgetown, Texas, product, who shared the honor with Kansas State's Mitchell Gregson.
Pumphrey led Oklahoma to back-to-back top-two finishes in October, including a win at the Macdonald Cup, its first team title since the 2006 Big 12 Championship.
The redshirt-freshman fired a personal-best, 5-under-par 65 in the first round of the Macdonald Cup, vaulting to the top of the individual leaderboard after round one and giving OU a first-day lead it wouldn't relinquish. His tournament-opening 65 was the lowest round for any Sooner golfer during fall play and led to a fifth-place finish for Pumphrey.
Pumphrey continued his stellar play at the Baylor Intercollegiate, finishing in a tie for second in the 66-player field that included four players ranked in the latest Golfweek top-35.
His play vaulted OU to a share of second at Royal Oaks Country Club, in a field that included a pair of squads ranked in the latest Golfweek top-10 poll (No. 2 Arkansas and No. 10 Baylor).
Pumphrey and the Sooners return to the links Feb. 4-6, at the UH-Hilo Intercollegiate in Waikoloa, Hawaii.
