OU Head Coach Jeff Capel
Opening comment:
“It felt good to finally play against someone else. I thought we did some good things. Obviously, we have a lot of work to do. Some guys played well. It was good to see how we were under the lights. Panhandle State played hard, we were just more talented than them.”
On goals for the game:
“Really we are just trying to get better, trying to improve and look at some different things. One of the things we talked about was trying to execute well and play with a sense of urgency. We wanted to value and try to win every possession. I think we have a lot of work to do on that.”
On the play of Willie Warren and Ray Willis:
“Willie (Warren) made more shots. Both of them defensively have to get better off the ball. Ray (Willis) missed some shots that he usually makes for us. Willie did some good things for us and he has been really good at valuing the basketball. Overall, for their first time out there they did a good job.”
On Blake Griffin:
“He has gotten a lot better. You still haven't really seen him shoot it yet. We are real lucky to have him but he still has large room for improvement. But we saw him make some 'wow' plays out there.”
Sophomore Forward Blake Griffin
On tonight's expectations:
“Just to play hard and not let up on any possession. Obviously we did that, we really wanted to be tough defensively and I think we did that at times. The thing about these games is we are really trying to figure out where we are as a team. Coach (Capel) was pretty pleased, but we have some corrections to make tomorrow.”
On not getting to use his jumper tonight, which he worked on in the offseason:
“I'm not going to worry about it. I worked on it so it will be there when the time comes. I won't try and force it. I'm just going to keep working on it so it will be there when I need it.”
On controlling his blocked shots instead of swatting the ball away:
“I definitely try to keep it in bounds and try to get it to someone who is open. I try to stop from swatting it out of bounds because they just get the ball back.”
On OU's defensive full-court pressure:
“That is something we have worked on a lot in practice this year because we have the bodies, the depth and athleticism to try and get up on teams a little more, not just allow them to walk up the court.”
Sophomore Guard Cade Davis
On being confident with shooting:
“I tried harder in the offseason to get it more consistent and tonight it felt good. Everything felt all right. These guys getting on the break and pushing the ball gets me those shots. I feel more relaxed when I have enough time to set up and shoot.”
On the new 3-point line distance:
“I don't feel like it's a challenge for me or the rest of my team. We have great shooters and guys that can shoot it from further back than that, so I don't feel like it's a big transition.”
