Two Sooners Champions at Open

ST. CHARLES, Mo. – Two University of Oklahoma wrestlers were named champions at last weekend's Lindenwood Open in St. Charles, Mo., and another placed fifth as the 2008-09 open season got underway.

Competing unattached, freshmen Justin Forrest and Joe Bach both went 5-0 and claimed first place in the 125 and heavyweight divisions, respectively. A Peculiar, Mo., native, Forrest outscored his opponents, 31-5, by registering two decisions and a technical fall, as well as posting two pins.

Joe Bach, a Liberal, Kan., native, pinned three of his five opponents en route to the title. OU's other medalist was freshman Dylan Joiner, who went 3-2 at the tournament on his way to fifth place, including a fall and a major decision.

Other Sooners in action over the weekend were freshmen Richard Immel (157 pounds), Marus Armato (165 pounds), Ben Bridell (174 pounds), Erich Schmidtke (184 pounds) and Keldrick Hall (197 pounds).

The Lindenwood Open marks the first of 13 open tournament of the season for select Sooners.  Next is the Harold Nichols Cyclone Open in Ames, Iowa, on Nov. 15.

Oklahoma will officially begin the season this Saturday, Nov. 8, when it travels to Brockport, N.Y., for the Brockport/Oklahoma Gold Classic. The Sooners will aim to win their 10th straight title at this weekend's event.
