NORMAN, Okla. -- The OU women's rowing team competed in its final regatta for the fall season on Saturday in Chattanooga, Tenn., at the Head of the Hooch. Oklahoma entered the Freshman/Novice Eights and the Championship Fours races.
OU's varsity rowing squad competed in the Championship Fours race, placing 21st out of 28 entries in a time of 20 minutes and twelve seconds.
"The varsity four struggled a bit this weekend, but I think it was an eye opener for our young, relatively inexperienced squad," said Head Coach Leeanne Crain. "We've got a lot of work to do between now and March. We need to keep our focus on preparing for the spring season, and continue to develop our skills and fitness on and off the water. If we do things the right way throughout the winter training cycle, we'll be competitive this spring."
In the Freshman/Novice Eights competition, the novice "A" boat finished fifth in a time of 18 minutes and 25.1 seconds, while the novice "B" boat finished ninth in a time of 19 minutes and ten seconds. There were 16 entries in the event.
"Our freshman/novice team did a great job handling the competition on Saturday," said Crain. "Finishing in the top five is a huge accomplishment for a first-year program and says a great deal about the level of commitment from these athletes who are brand new to the sport."
Next up for the Oklahoma rowers will be a winter training trip that will held prepare them for the spring rowing season.
