NORMAN, Okla. - University of Oklahoma men's golf coach Jim Ragan announced the signing of Nathan Chambers to a National Letter of Intent on Monday. The Purcell, Okla., native will join the Sooners for the 2009-2010 season.
Chambers has compiled an extensive junior resume that is highlighted by a win at the U.S. Junior Amateur Sectional Qualifying at Oklahoma City Golf & Country Club in 2007. The Purcell H.S. standout went on to record rounds of 77 and 75 at the '07 U.S. Junior Amateur, missing match play by a single stroke.
A 2008 U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship qualifier, Chambers also garnered medalist honors in back-to-back Norman City Championships ('07 and '08).
“We are extremely excited about Nathan joining our golf program,” said Ragan. “He is a very talented player that has proven his merit in some of the top amateur events in the country. His junior golf resume speaks for itself and we look forward to some of that same success in his transition to collegiate golf.”
Competing regularly in American Junior Golf Association events, the Texas Junior Golf Tour and the Future Collegians World Tour, Chambers carded a two-stroke victory at the '07 TJGT Worldlink Open after rounds of 71 and 70.
Chambers was the only player in red figures at the '05 TJGT Bridlewood Championship, winning by a stroke over a 62-player field.
Bolstered by a pair of 70s to close the '08 AJGA Scissortail Junior Championship, Chambers tied for third at Emerald Falls Golf Club in Broken Arrow, Okla., just two strokes behind the leader.
The 18-year-old will feel right at home at Jimmie Austin OU Golf Club, the home course of the Sooners. Chambers placed third (73-73) at the '08 TJGT Sooner Jr. Invitational at Jimmie Austin in an invitation-only field of over 70 players at the nationally-ranked Golfweek event.
The son of Mike and Susan Chambers, Nathan's sister Morgan is a sophomore on the Baylor women's golf squad.
