NORMAN, Okla.-- The University of Oklahoma women's rowing team will be traveling to Austin, Texas, this Saturday, Oct. 25, for the Head of the Colorado Regatta. Also called "Pumpkinhead," the regatta is held annually on the last Saturday of October and is celebrating its 26th year of competition.
Hosted by the Austin Rowing Club, the regatta is a 5,000 meter head race on Town Lake in Austin. Rowers will race the Seven Bridges Course, containing gradual turns and offering many spectator-friendly locations along the shores and on the bridges.
Several events at the regatta will be offered for the following boat types: singles, doubles, quads, pairs, coxed fours, and eights in the following categories: open, masters, juniors, novice and recreational.
Besides offering a variety of competition, the Head of the Colorado is also alive with the vibrant October season, encouraging the Halloween spirit by offering prizes for the crew with the best costumes.
The OU Varsity Rowing squad has been hard at work since their last competition, the Head of the Oklahoma Regatta on Oct. 3-5. The varsity rowers will be competing in the WO4+ event at the Head of the Colorado, or the women's open four with coxswain.
The last time this squad competed, they placed 9th in a field of 32, finishing with a time of 17 minutes and seven seconds and also defeating Big 12 conference opponent Kansas.
Teams entered in this event at the Head of the Colorado include Texas, Oklahoma State, Baylor, SMU, Tulane, UCO, and Rice.
The novice squad will also travel to Austin, marking the first time for them to compete.
Head Coach Leeanne Crain Quote:
"Fall racing provides us with an opportunity to check our speed very early in the year. This will be the first racing opportunity for our novice squad and an important one before traveling to Tennessee to compete in the Head of the Hooch next weekend, where we'll face some strong competition from the South region."
