OU Women No. 1 in Big 12 Poll

NORMAN, Okla. -- The University of Oklahoma women's basketball team completed its sixth official practice, an exclusive scrimmage for season-ticket holders, Thursday night at the Lloyd Noble Center.

Approximately 650 fans watched the Sooners split time between Red and White squads in six competitive mini-periods during the 1 ½-hour scrimmage.

“I saw some good stuff,” OU head coach Sherri Coale said. “Obviously, our offensive organization right now, we don't have anything in. We've spent a lot of time on defensive positioning and, actually, our positioning wasn't too bad. We don't have a lot of confidence in that positioning right now to play as hard as we need to play.

“Overall, I saw some good stuff. The ball went in the basket with some nice regularity. That was good to see. Several different guys were making 3s and shooting with confidence. Overall, I was really pleased. It was a good place to start. We know what we need to work on now.”

Senior Ashley Paris led the way, scoring 24 points from a 12-of-19 (.632) shooting performance. Sophomore Jenny Vining drilled five or her 10 3-point attempts, some from as far as 25 feet away, and was 6-of-11 overall for 17 points.

“I felt like we were really good,” Sooner co-captain Amanda Thompson said. “We slowed down a little bit when we got tired and forgot to do the little things. But, overall, I think we competed and we got a little better today considering the fact that we haven't gone up and down (the court) in a while.”

Thompson scored 15 points and counted a scrimmage-leading 10 rebounds.

Preseason Big 12 Freshman of the Year Whitney Hand had one of the most complete stat lines with 16 points, nine rebounds, five assists and six steals.

“It was really fun experience,” Hand said of playing in front of fans for the first time as a Sooner. “It's nerve-racking for sure, but what are you going to do?”

Courtney Paris joined the team for the final four periods following a class. The preseason Big 12 Player of the Year scored 12 points on 6-of-9 (.666) shooting and added nine rebounds.

“It's a nice feeling,” Coale said of her team's demeanor. “Our guys are excited about it, but they're not too giddy. They know they still have a lot of work to do. I like the feel of them right now.”

OU returns to the court for practice Friday afternoon.
