NORMAN, Okla. -- When Major League Baseball's 2008 World Series between the Tampa Bay Rays and Philadelphia Phillies begins on Wednesday in Tampa Bay, Fla., two former Sooners will be taking the field.
Jason Bartlett, who lettered at OU in 2000 and 2001, has started all 11 postseason games for the Rays at shortstop and will face another 2001 OU letterwinner, Greg Dobbs (3B) of the Phillies.
Dobbs has been one of the Phillies' most versatile fielders in 2008, playing four different positions (LF, RF, 1B, 3B). The former Sooner All-American (2001) has played in 128 games this season, with a majority of the starts at third base, and currently has a .301 batting average with nine homers and 40 RBIs. Dobbs has appeared in six of the Phillies' nine postseason games this year and is hitting .545 in 11 at-bats.
In his first year with the Rays, Bartlett, a two-time All-Big 12 performer at OU, is hitting .286 with 37 RBIs and 20 stolen bases. The Rays' starting shortstop has collected nine base hits in the 11 postseason games so far.
The pair will become the first Sooners to play in a World Series game since Mark Redman (1994-95) started game two of the 2003 Championship on the mound for the Florida Marlins.
"I am extremely proud and excited for both of them," said OU Head Coach Sunny Golloway. "They were both great players at OU under Larry Cochell and it's always special to see Sooners having success at the next level."
Game one of the World Series is slated for Wednesday, Oct. 22 at 7 p.m. (CT) and can be seen live on Fox (Cox Channel 12 in OKC). Click here for the remainder of the schedule.
