LAWRENCE, Kan. - The University of Oklahoma volleyball team dropped a 3-1 decision to the University of Kansas on Saturday evening at the Horejsi Family Athletics Center. The Sooners (8-11, 4-7 Big 12) managed to hit better and out-block the Jayhawks (9-9, 3-6 Big 12) but nine OU service errors provided KU with the points needed to take the win.
The Jayhawks took the opening set, 27-25. The Sooners responded winning the second, 25-17. After the intermission, Kansas took the final two sets, 26-24 and 25-22.
Sophomore Sarah Freudenrich led the Sooners with 13 kills, a new career high. She also added two block solos and five block assists to tally 18.5 points on the evening. Freshman Caitlin Higgins and redshirt sophomore Francie Ekwerekwu each added 12 kills. Ekwerekwu hit .409 to lead OU players that saw action in all four sets. Freshman Suzy Boulavsky had 11 kills with five block assists and the first block solo of her career to tally 14.5 points.
Freshman Brianne Barker finished the evening with 48 assists. Defensively, senior Lacy Barnes led the Sooners with 20 digs, while Higgins added 19. With the double-digit kills and digs, Higgins recorded her ninth double-double of the year. She is now tied with Barker for the team lead in the category.
As a team, OU hit .252 compared to Kansas' .205 clip. Oklahoma hit .467 in the second set, the highest by either team in a single set on the evening. The Sooners edged out the Jayhawks 11-10 in blocks. Kansas managed to tally 63 kills to OU's 60. The four-set match featured 36 ties and 10 lead changes, including a match-high 15 ties in the opening set.
Karina Garlington and Savannah Noyes led Kansas with 17 kills each, while Melissa Manda added 16 digs.
The Sooners have an open date Wednesday before hosting second-ranked Nebraska on Saturday, Oct. 25 at 7 p.m. CT at McCasland Field House. The Sooners invite fans to wear pink for Breast Cancer Awareness Night.
