NORMAN, Okla. -- No. 18 Oklahoma proved to be no match for No. 9 Iowa State (12-3, 1-0 in Big 12) Friday evening in Norman, as the Cyclones defeated the Sooners by a 31-3 final tally.

No. 5 Joel Flaggert gave Oklahoma (11-3, 0-2 in Big 12) its only points on the evening in the 197 bout with a decision over No. 20 David Zabriskie. Flaggert scored the only point in the third period by an escape to take the 3-2 win.

"We got out-toughed, out-conditioned and out-coached," head coach Jack Spates said. "Tonight was obviously very frustrating for us. I am extremely disappointed in both the loss and our effort."

Iowa State's No. 17-ranked Tyler Clark began the match posting four points by defeating 125 pound Joey Fio by a 9-0 major decision. No. 7 Nick Fanthorpe then recorded a fall at 133 pounds versus Sooner John Starzyk to make the team score 10-0.

Two upsets followed, starting with No. 20 Nick Gallick over No. 14 Zack Bailey of Oklahoma by a 10-3 decision in the 133 pound bout. No. 9 Will Rowe was then topped by 149 pound Mitch Mueller by a 5-2 decision to make it a 16-0 Cyclone advantage.

Chad Terry, ranked for the first week at No. 20, was then defeated by No. 6 Cyler Sanderson of ISU at 157 pounds by a 8-3 decision.

Three periods was not enough in the 165 pound bout, as Sooner Max Dean and ISU's Jon Reader were forced to overtime. Reader scored a takedown during the sudden death period to record the win, 9-7. Aron Scott made it a 25-0 Iowa State lead by scoring a 3-1 decision over 174 pound Jeff James.

The highly anticipated matchup of the evening also went the Cyclone's way, with No. 1 Jake Varner giving senior Joshua Weitzel his first loss of the season by a 5-1 decision.

After Flaggert's win, Nathan Fernandez took No. 5 David Zabriskie down to the final period. Zabriskie eventually scored a takedown with 13 seconds to go in the final period to win the match, 6-5.

"We need to go home and evaluate this," Spates said. "We will learn from this disappointment tonight and move on."

The Sooners step out of conference for their next match against Arizona State next Friday, Feb. 1, at the Howard McCasland Field House in Norman. The match is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. and admission is free to the public.
