NORMAN, Okla. - Oklahoma men's basketball freshman forward Blake Griffin was named the Phillips 66 Big 12 Rookie of the Week on Monday. It marks the second time Griffin has been honored by the Big 12 Conference this year, as he was named its Player of the Week on Dec. 31.
Griffin averaged 26.5 points, 10.5 rebounds and 2.0 assists while shooting .708 from the field in games against Mount St. Mary's and Kansas State last week. He finished with 26 points (then a career high), seven rebounds and three assists in an 81-57 win over Mount St. Mary's before tallying a career-high 27 points, 14 rebounds and two steals in an 84-82 loss to Kansas State. The 27 points and 14 boards against the Wildcats represented his sixth double-double of the year.
The 6-10, 243-pounder is now averaging 15.4 points per game (ranks ninth in the Big 12) and 9.1 rebounds (ranks third) while shooting .600 from the floor (ranks second). He has scored in double figures 14 times in the team's 16 games, including in each of the last nine contests.
The last Oklahoma freshman to average more than 15.4 points a game for an entire season was Jeff Webster in 1990-91 (18.3). The last OU freshman to average more than 9.1 rebounds was Wayman Tisdale in 1982-83 (10.3).
Kansas State freshman forward Michael Beasley was named the league's Player of the Week after averaging 28.5 points and 10.5 rebounds in wins over Savannah State and OU.
Oklahoma returns to action Monday at No.3 Kansas in an 8 p.m. CST game televised by ESPN. It will host Texas Tech on Saturday at 3 p.m. CST.
