NORMAN, Okla. -- After two weeks of individual workouts, the OU women's basketball team is eager to get on the court and face opponents other than those they see each day in the locker room.
Self-described as speedier, healthier and more well-conditioned than at this point last year, the Sooners have been under the guidance of strength and conditioning coach Tim Overman since the fall semester began and the result has been overwhelmingly positive.
"Everyone has been putting their full effort into every workout or drill," Overman said. "All of the players came back from the summer in great condition and we've really just had to focus on gaining strength and quickness.
"This group of guards has more speed than we've had in my time here and the returning post players have all shown dramatic physical improvements.
"There are a few nagging injuries here and there that come naturally with hard work. Fortunately, there's plenty of time before the season begins to heal and have everyone at 100 percent."
The Sooners' cause for extra motivation may be because they face Maryland (Nov. 11 at Chapel Hill, N.C.) and Tennessee (Nov. 15 at Tampa, Fla.), the past two national champions, in their first two regular-season contests.
The team can begin official practices beginning Thursday, Oct. 12. Until then, there's another five weeks of early-morning weight lifting and afternoon conditioning.
OU hosts two exhibition games at the Lloyd Noble Center against Henderson State (Thursday, Nov. 1, at 7 p.m.) and Oklahoma Christian (Tuesday, Nov. 6, at 7 p.m.) before going on the road to start the toughest schedule the Sooners have played in Sherri Coale's tenure.
