NORMAN, Okla. - University of Oklahoma head coach Jack Spates announced the Sooners' 16-match 2007-08 regular season schedule on Thursday.
OU will compete in eight duals against schools that finished in the top-25 in last season's NCAA final standings. OU will host eight duals at Howard McCasland Field House and will travel to Oklahoma City to compete in four more. The Sooners will also see action at the annual Brockport/Oklahoma Gold Classic as well as the Oklahoma Open.
"Our schedule is always very challenging", Oklahoma head coach Jack Spates said. "The conference will be beastly this year, and I have an expectation that all five Big 12 teams will be in the top-10 at the NCAA's. We like a schedule that will prepare us for the NCAA Championships, and this year will be no different."
The Sooners will wrestle against 11 non-conference opponents, including Pittsburgh and Wisconsin which finished in the top-20 in last year's final standings. ACC school North Carolina State, the Big East's Pittsburgh and the Big 10's Michigan State are also on this year's schedule.
Oklahoma will open the season when they travel to Oklahoma City for a triple-dual on Nov. 4 against Oklahoma City, Missouri Valley and Neosha Community College.
After the opener, the squad will travel to Brockport, N.Y., to compete in the annual Brockport/Oklahoma Gold Classic on Nov. 10 before returning home to compete in its first home dual against North Carolina State on Nov 15.
The Oklahoma Open is next on Nov. 24, followed by back-to-back road duals against Oklahoma State and defending Division II National Champion, Central Oklahoma on Dec. 2 and 7, respectively.
The team will then travel to the Lonestar Duals in Arlington, Texas, Jan. 5, before returning home to wrestle six straight matches in the state of Oklahoma.
The Big 12 conference schedule will see the Sooners go to play at Missouri, Nebraska and Oklahoma State. Home duals are slated against Iowa State and Oklahoma State.
The Big 12 Championships will be held in Stillwater, Okla., at Gallagher Iba Arena, Saturday March 8. Big 12 qualifiers will travel to St. Louis, Mo., for the NCAA Championships, March 20-22.
The Sooners welcome 10 newcomers to the 2007-08 squad and return four NCAA qualifiers from last season in Kyle Terry, Will Rowe, Joshua Weitzel and Joel Flaggert.
Sooner wrestlers will begin practice Sept. 18.
